In a remote, green corner of the Upper Eden Valley lies Kirkby Stephen, a small Westmorland market town ringed by some of northern England's finest hill country. A market charter granted in the 1350s still sees stalls fill the main street on Mondays, and the town has long welcomed walkers, sitting directly on Wainwright's celebrated Coast to Coast walk between Shap and the moors beyond. This is glorious territory for an active dog. Classic fell walks such as Nine Standards Rigg and Wild Boar Fell rise close at hand, while old railway lines and riverside tracks along the young Eden offer gentler going. With open moorland all around, dogs must be kept under close control near sheep and ground-nesting birds in spring and summer. Kirkby Stephen provides characterful stone cottages and converted barns, frequently with enclosed gardens, an ideal walkers' base for the Howgills, the Pennines and the Upper Eden.
